The weather is finally starting to warm up which has motivated me to swap out my home fragrances for some fresh, summery options. When it comes to my house, I am a big fan of fresh and clean. Having a two year old means my house isn’t always perfectly tidied, but I like to have some clean smelling products on hand so that I can close my eyes, inhale, and pretend I’m standing in the middle of a perfectly clean organized house. My go to lately has been this linen spray.
I am always looking for new ideas on household products I can make myself especially when it comes to fragrance. Store bought fragrances often have lots of fillers and harsh chemicals that are very irritating to the skin, lungs, and nervous system. As someone who has always dealt with eczema and migraines, I am very mindful about the fragrance I use in my home, but having a toddler running around has inspired me to pay even closer attention to the products and ingredients I bring into my house. This linen spray is one that I find myself reaching for regularly to give my home a quick refresh. It’s super quick and easy to make and only 3 ingredients!
Before getting started, there are a few things to make sure you have on hand. First you’re going to need a bottle to put your spray into. I am a fan of THESE which I found on amazon. I personally prefer glass over plastic, and the amber color helps prevent UV light from accelerating the breakdown of the spray. Plus they look great in my cabinet. This set of bottles also came with a handful of labels (which I have also used for some other homemade cleaners) as well as a small collapsable funnel to make pouring easier.
The glass droppers I keep on hand for various projects involving essential oils can be found HERE. This set has 20 droppers which means I can keep one dropper per essential oil.
The next two ingredients you’ll need are distilled or purified water and vodka. I already had both of these on hand and didn’t get too fancy with it. Vodka naturally kills bacteria and can be helpful in reducing unpleasant odors. It also dries very quickly and doesn’t leave a strong scent behind. I have learned that lots of household products I like to make myself require some amount of alcohol so I keep a large jug of vodka in my pantry for this exact purpose. I used Caliber Vodka, and I have no complaints.
The next thing you’ll need are some essential oils. There is lots of info out there on how to ensure you’re using high quality oils. When I first started my homemaking journey a few years ago I stocked up on some, but have since learned they are not the highest quality available. I don’t use these for anything on my skin, but I feel comfortable using them for this recipe. High quality essential oils are definitely more expensive. Do your own research and use what you’re comfortable with.
Which oils you pick is totally up to you! My favorite combination for the linen spray is lemongrass and lavender. Lavender is known for being calming and soothing. It can help improve sleep and can also lower your heart rate. In general, it does a good job of calming the nervous system. Lemongrass is thought to prevent the growth of some bacteria. It also is known to help relieve pain, and it has antioxidant properties. The combination of these two essential oils results in a clean, fresh, soothing scent that can be used in any room of the house!
Some other good options for a linen spray include:
- Peppermint
- Tea tree
- Eucalyptus
- Rosemary
- Chamomile
- Bergamot
- Sandalwood
Ingredients:
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 cup vodka
- 40 drops lavender essential oil
- 40 drops lemongrass essential oil

Step #1
Using a funnel, pour 1 cup distilled water into spray bottle.
Step #2
Using a funnel, pour 1 cup vodka into spray bottle.

Step #3
Using a dropper, add 30-50 drops of your choice of essential oil.

Step #4
Replace lid on spray bottle and gentle swirl/agitate to combine the essential oil into the water and vodka mixture.
Step #5
You’re done! Just that easy. Be sure to test the spray on a small section of material before using to ensure that it will not cause any discoloration. I have used mine on couches, recliners, curtains, mattresses, blankets, and sheets with no issues.
